1. In 2269, Malcolm's mother perished in a shuttle incident. Mal was left to deal with the funeral arrangements on his own, since his father was in another system at an interplanetary business conference. The event led to many his current "problems".
2. in 2270, Mal was dating a fellow cadet (upper classman). She left him to date a cadet in the command division. He hasn't dated anyone since.
3. Malcolm has a bit of a "love at first sight" crush on Valerie Kibbs from Engineering.
